In 1958, Swiss racing driver Harry Zweifel sent Tissot a signed photograph along with a German note that declared, “My Tissot is at my side in every race.” Inspired by this unsolicited endorsement, Tissot’s watchmakers set out to create a wristwatch robust and reliable enough for automobile racing. The result was the PR 516, originally spelled with a space between letters and numerals and later hyphenated. The “PR” stands for either “Particularly Robust” or “Precision and Resistance,” depending on whom you ask. The three numerals signify the 16th model in the 5th series. Notably, Tissot models with a “5” in their name historically boasted waterproof features. The original PR 516 extended the brand’s Seastar dive watch series. Debuting in 1965, it followed in the footsteps of two iconic predecessors in the racing watch category: the Rolex Daytona (1963) and the Heuer Carrera (1964).
