Citizen Eco-Drive Fueled by Any light

The Eco-Drive Story

Quartz watches powered by batteries were commonly used in Japan in the 1970s. However, one of their drawbacks was the trouble of having to replace and dispose of dead batteries. In order to resolve these problems and provide something innovative and better, CITIZEN designed a light-powered watch.

In 1976, CITIZEN introduced world’s first light-powered analogue quartz watch and named them Eco-drive accepting its eco-friendly origins. This eco-friendly Eco-Drive system, developed exclusively by CITIZEN, is a remarkable technological innovation. It demonstrates an approach to environmental protection.

Why Eco-Drive watches?

No need for regular battery replacement

Once upon a time, everyone understood that quartz watches required periodic battery replacement. But the introduction of Eco-Drive overturned common perception. Eco-Drive is a light-powered technology that uses an integrated solar cell to convert light into energy to power watches.

Suddenly, the inconvenience of changing batteries was history.

Generates power from any light source

The Eco-Drive is made to be charged by commonplace light sources like desk and fluorescent indoor lighting. Your watch will never stop; therefore, it gives you comfort to perform your daily activities.

Runs for over six months – even in darkness

With Eco-Drive you don’t need light to generate power for your watch all the time. Eco-Drive can operate in complete darkness for more than six months on a single full charge. In fact, certain versions with a power-saving feature can run for up to seven years!

How Citizen Eco-Drive Works?

Any light source can be used with Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology to generate energy. Literally anything can serve as the light source, such as a lamp, the sun, a computer screen, etc. The efficiency of the light source determines how quickly it charges. The capacitor, an electrical power cell, stores everything the Eco-Drive collects.

The Eco-Drive will use the stored energy to power the watch when there is enough light. It will consume the energy in the capacitor if the light source is insufficient.
