Seiko Prospex, Presage and Astron

Linda & Co is an Authorised dealer of Seiko

When Kintaro Hattori founded his company in 1881, he was just 21 years old. During his fifty years at the helm, Seiko became the leading watch company in Japan, with its own design and production facilities. This achievement was a direct result of his single-minded vision that Seiko should be “Always one step ahead of the rest”. His words resonate still and continue to inspire Seiko today. Throughout this year, Seiko will release a series of creations that embody the spirit of Kintaro’s words and honour the 140th anniversary of the founding of his company.

The celebrations start with a series of  Seiko Prospex, Presage and Astron watches inspired by the landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes of Japan.

The island of Iriomote in Okinawa Prefecture attracts divers from all over Japan and elsewhere.

Its abundant coral reefs teem with marine life but the island’s special charm lies in the primeval and pristine mangrove forests that surround it. Further, Iriomote is home to several species of flora and fauna that are rare and, in some instances, unique to the island. With its reefs, jungle, mangrove forests, beaches, rivers and waterfalls, Iriomote is an island of rich and varied beauty whose verdant nature is reflected in the deep green of the dials in this new series of timepieces.

The two mechanical watches in this Iriomote-inspired series are based on Seiko’s celebrated 1968 diver’s. One is a 300 meter water resistant, eight beat diver’s watch with a unique onepiece case structure. Suitable for saturation as well as air diving, it is made, assembled and adjusted by the skilled craftsmen and women of Shizukuishi and powered by Calibre 8L35, which was created especially for diver’s watches. The second mechanical watch is a contemporary reinvention of the 1968 original. It houses a six beat calibre and is 200 meter water resistant.
Both are offered as limited editions, of 3,000 and 6,000 respectively. The third watch in the series is a 200m solar chronograph. It, too, is a limited edition of 4,000. All three are presented on stainless steel bracelets but are also accompanied by an extra silicone strap. All three watches will be available in March at Seiko Boutiques and selected Seiko retailers worldwide.

A Presage Sharp Edged Series automatic watch, inspired by the Tokyo dawn.

Created in 2020, the Presage Sharp Edged Series combines flat surfaces with sharp angles that, together, allow the watch to sparkle wherever the light strikes. Like others in this series, this new creation has an Asanoha or hemp leaf pattern that has been used for a thousand years and more in Japanese fabrics. The gold color accents of the indexes and hands are set onto a black dial so as to be reminiscent of the sunlight that illuminates Tokyo in the early dawn. Whether on the stainless steel bracelet or the alternative black leather strap that is also included, this automatic Presage timepiece offers a very different, modern perspective on Japanese aesthetics. It is a limited edition of 4,000 and will be available in February at Seiko Boutiques and selected Seiko retailers worldwide.

Astron captures the beauty of cherry blossom by night.

The Japanese enchantment with cherry blossom extends far beyond the daylight hours. Yozakura is the name given to these ephemeral but beautiful flowers when, seen under a star-lit sky, they give an ethereal and magical glow to the space around them. With a black case and bracelet acting as the night sky, the purple dial with its pink hue captures the beauty of Yozakura. This subtly coloured dial becomes darker towards the six o’clock position, adding a mysterious depth and enhancing the illusion that it is a gentle spring evening in Japan. The case has the same curved silhouette and the same wide case lugs as the 1969 Quartz Astron and houses the latest and most advanced GPS Solar Dual-Time Calibre 5X53 which adjusts to the exact time anywhere* in the world, using just the power of light and offers both high speed time zone adjustment and time transfer functions. This unique Astron watch will be available as a limited edition of 1,500 at Seiko Boutiques and selected Seiko retailers worldwide in February 2021.

SevenFriday

SevenFriday

Three years ago Zurich-based lifestyle brand SEVENFRIDAY opened it’s first Space – a place where people could interact with friends, take some food, drinks and relax. Fast-forward to 2019 and the opening of their 25th Space in Shanghai.

For those in the dark, SEVENFRIDAY sell unique watches – predominately – as well as a growing eyewear offering, bracelets and limited edition apparel, but that isn’t the driving force behind the brand – people are.

A refreshing twist on traditional ‘watch’ industry etiquette, SEVENFRIDAY is about living life the best way we can – a mantra to strive toward. This approach motivated the team to look at Spaces where like-minded people could walk into that world and experience a vibrancy that is new.

“Show Me Don’t Tell Me, is our brand tagline,” says owner Dan Niederer “we want people to feel energised by us and to interact, so the idea for the Spaces started there,” he adds.

Opening their first Space in Jakarta, Indonesia, back in 2016, SEVENFRIDAY set the tone for the emergence of other Spaces, including Hong Kong, Mumbai, Abu Dhabi, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Tapai, Mexico City and of course Zurich among others.

Collaborating with local street artists and genres for its design aesthetic and working with local musicians/DJs as well as food and drink specialists for event evenings and launches has been commonplace and a mechanism to attract a growing loyal customer base and the simply curious.

“The importance here is that we are not showing products in people’s faces. The retail element is of course important, but very subtle and incidental to our Space concept and design,” says Niederer “We want people from all cultures to connect and exchange and to feel comfortable – to not feel scrutinised. The Spaces are for people to come together to spend quality time with friends and family ”

With interior architecture and design that hints toward the product, capturing an organic, energised pulse for the brand, SEVENFRIDAY joined forces with award-winning London Design Agency BusbyWebb to refine the look for their latest offerings, with Shanghai’s opening on September 25 being a major marker in that process.

James Coates, Interiors Director at BusbyWebb said: “We developed the idea around seeing the inner-working within the Space, as we do with the watches, to create a retail experience. We did this by developing the current offer and layering textures, exposing the skeletons of the current architecture to a refined ‘industrial feel’, but still in-keeping with the SEVENFRIDAY brand. “The environment had to be different with a more multi-functional social Space for the customer, so you can immerse yourself with the brand or hang out with a coffee, beer or food,” he adds.

With further ‘Spaces’ well on their way and in the pipeline, customers will be treated to numerous events and activations within the environments – a must visit should you and your friends/colleagues be close by.

G Shock Great History

G Shock Great History

G Shock was born from a developer’s dream of “creating a watch that never breaks”. Guided by a “Triple 10” development concept, the design teams sought a watch with 10-meter free-fall endurance, 10-bar water resistance and a 10-year battery life. At a time when it was commonly believed that watches were breakable items,  development represented a challenge to common sense. The number of experimental prototypes built for endurance testing reached over 200.

And the structural development and parts improvement took approximately two years. After a long, hard process of trial and error, G-Shock was finally launched. A shock resistant structure that overturned conventional thinking about watches was realised through breakthrough thinking, including the ideas of a hollow-structured case, all-directional protective covering and the use of cushioning material to protect critical parts.

These were the fruits of technological development that insisted on “toughness” and a revolution in watch design. Since launched, has continued to evolve for more then 30 long years, carrying on the toughness of spirit and uncompromising passion that led its developers to persist in their unshakable belief.

Born from the breakthrough idea of a hollow structure

The case employs a hollow structure in which the module is “floated” to protect it from shocks. A full urethane bezel provides all-directional enclosure to prevent direct shocks from striking the glass and buttons. And cushioning material provides extra protection for the key parts such as the crystal oscillator inside the module. These and other shock-resistant technologies, exclusive to G-Shock, are spread generously throughout the body and the module interior to raise toughness to the highest levels.

Case design offering protection against free-fall shocks

A prominent bezel configuration was adopted to prevent the buttons and glass from contacting flat surfaces, thus protecting them from shocks when falling at any angle. This design concept stressing protection from shocks is basic to every case design, and the same protective structure is employed not only for our urethane cases, but also for our mm teal cases and analog watch cases.

G Shock Urethane band that acts as a shock absorber

The band actually acts as a shock absorber itself, protecting against shocks from behind. We have established strict standards for the combination ratio of urethane resin employed. Neither too soft nor too hard, the superb specified combination realises an ideal balance between shock resistance and comfortable wear-ability.

All-Directional Covering

Direct shocks to the buttons and the glass surface are prevented by a protective urethane-resin bezel design. Shock resistance has been ensured by inserting cushioning material between the bezel and case in metal models with lower shock-absorption capabilities.

G Shock Protection of important parts with cushioning material

The crystal oscillator and other important parts inside the module are individually protected with cushioning material. This prevents contact failures and improper operation due to distortions that could otherwise occur inside the module if the watch experience a sudden strong impact.

G Shock Watches Everlast Limited Edition

G Shock Watches Everlast Limited Edition

blog

While Casio may not be intrinsically linked to boxing, the latest addition to the G-Shock watches collection — the Casio G-Shock Watch GBA800EL-4A Special Edition from G Shock watches — sees the Japanese heavyweight step into Everlast’s corner for a collaboration that has all the vital statistics necessary to challenge for the crown within a voluminous, if often low-quality, price bracket.

Legendary boxing brand Everlast is teaming up with Casio to release the limited edition G-Shock GBA-800EL-4A. This custom version of the Bluetooth-connected step-tracking G-SQUAD watch features the boxing brand’s traditional glove colors of red, white, and black. An Everlast logo appears on the dial, lower band, and the stainless steel case back. The slogan “Choice of Champions” appears in red on the LCD display when the LED light is activated. The watch comes in exclusive co-branded packaging including a red and white tin case.

Big brands make a powerful team (G-Shock + Everlast)

Founded in New York City in 1910, Everlast is a brand whose name is linked with many of the sport’s greatest stars. Associated with pugilists such as Jack Dempsey, Roberto Duran, Joe Frazier, Marvin Hagler, Larry Holmes, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Muhammad Ali, Everlast has recently branched out into MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), bringing more than a century of combat-equipment expertise to this new arena.

Collaborations of this nature can sometimes feel disingenuous and forced, but the relevant functionality of the GBA800EL-4A (catchy name) makes this partnership work. It does so on both an aesthetic and practical level. This new addition to the mammoth Casio G-Shock line is styled in the classic bright red of traditional boxing gloves, with the white and black accents for which the Everlast brand is known. The brand’s logo is engraved on the stainless steel case and is printed on both the dial (between 9 and 12 o’clock) and the shoulder of the strap at 6 o’clock.
