Zirconium is a naturally occurring element that is often produced by chlorinating zircon and other minerals. This implies that zirconium must go through an extraction procedure in order to be obtained in its “natural state.” Fortunately, the purification procedure is cheap and enables the production of significant amounts of zirconium at a very low cost.

When zirconium is created in this way, it initially has a silvery or greyish hue. To oxidise the metal and give it a deep black hue, it is usually heat treated and exposed after that. One of zirconium’s primary selling points is that most metals can only obtain a hue this deep black through plating or antiquing, both of which tend to wear out over time.
